The issue which I would like to share with you in todays Monday Moan is something which has been on my mind for some time and is a subject which has been at the forefront of many safer internet and social media campaigns… The focus of this week’s Monday Moan is directed at ‘reputable’ health and wellbeing brands using influencers and social media users to promote diet and weightloss products...
You may, or may not be aware that there are a number of influencer platforms available whereby influencers can sign up and apply to take part in campaigns, this in itself is pretty above board however I’ve noticed that a number of the active campaigns are offering weight loss and fat metabolising tablets in exchange for influencers to share the item on their socials along with their thoughts and experiences.
Again, this practice is fairly common however my concern is that these supplements are being issued without any consideration given to the individuals who are promoting these campaigns and in addition to this, they are actively promoting supplements which are potentially triggering and in many cases detrimental to the health and well-being of many campaign participants.
From my own experiences, with many of the influencer campaigns there is a super fast turnaround and therefore the majority of content creators and influencers sharing these supplements will only be sharing their thoughts after using the supplements for a short period of time, in many cases a week. Whilst influencers must share that have received the product in exchange for an honest review, identifying the product as a # AD they are under no obligation to state the duration in which they have been trying the supplements and they are not required to provide a medical disclaimer – I can’t help but feel that this adds to the insincerity and danger of this type of content.
Admittedly, I have shared gifted supplements on my socials however I make a conscious effort not to share my experience (unless I have genuinely used the supplements for an adequate duration) and to simply share the benefits advertised along with the product. I also make an effort to state the duration in which I have been trying the products and when I don’t feel that I am able to give honest feedback, I ensure that I share this with my followers.
I haven’t written this post to explore the issue in any further detail than my thoughts at face value, however this is something that I plan to investigate over the next couple of months. Please be mindful of the information you absorb when scrolling your socials, ensure that you apply any appropriate disclaimers to your content and speak with a medical professional before you jump onto any supplementary hypes.
